Tashi Cho Jong is the top Buddhist monastery and fortress in Thimphu city.


This monastery and fort is located on the west bank of the Wang Chu River at the northern edge of Thimphu City, Bhutan. It is said that the Buddhist guru Rimp Po Che (Guru Padmasambhava) flew from Tibet on the back of a tigress. He meditated for three years, three months, three days and three hours in a cave on the top of this mountain in the 8th century.

It is also known as Pungtang Dichen Photrang Dzong. Which is the administrative center of Punakha district. Jabdrarang Rinpoche built the palace in 1737-38. The architect was Nagawang Namgyal. Dzong is one of Bhutan's second largest and oldest regions for architecturally magnificent royal structures. The palace houses the remains of monks from the Rangzung Kasarpani lineage, including those of the Dakshina Drukpa lineage of the Kandya sect of Tibetan Buddhism. UNESCO has included the Punakha Dzong in the heritage of Bhutan. Before 1955, Punakha Jung belonged Bhutan

                                                                     Chimi Lakhang

Punakha is situated on a hill in the center of the valley of the district. Dedicated to Chimi Lakhang Lama Drukpa Kuenli. who in the late 15th century composed the 'Divine Madman' using humour, song, insults to dramatize his teachings. Many people come to this temple hoping to get children. It is widely believed that if a couple prays at this temple hoping for a child, their wish will be fulfilled. Hence this temple is also called fertility temple.
